The Math Bridge Program

What is Math Bridge?

  • Interested in joining Math Bridge, Fall 2008? For the date and time of Orientation Meeetings: click here.
  • Math Bridge is a one-year-long program beginning each Fall Semester. The purpose of the program is to assist African-American, Hispanic, and Native American students to complete Elementary Algebra and Intermediate Algebra. However, all students are welcome to apply.
  • Our goal is to increase the number of underrepresented students
    1. who qualify for the many courses with math prerequisites offered at CCSF
    2. who transfer to four-year colleges and universities
  • This is not a remedial program. The workshop, tutoring, and other activities are designed to supplement the traditional math lecture and to help students develop skills that will be useful in other college courses.
  • The program has three mandatory components:
    1. Daily Algebra class M-F, 10-11 a.m.
    2. Workshop MWF 11-12.
    3. Study Sessions three hours per week (TBA).
Students enrolled in the program must actively participate in all three components.

Which courses are included in the program?

First semester (Fall only):

  • Math 840 Elementary Algebra
  • Math S Algebra Workshop
  • After-class study sessions.
  • Students enrolled in the program must actively participate in all three components above.

Second semester (Spring only):

  • Math 860 Intermediate Algebra
  • Math U Algebra Workshop
  • After-class study sessions.
  • Students enrolled in the program must actively participate in all three components above.

How is Math Bridge different from other math courses?

  • The Workshop. The traditional math lecture course is followed by one hour of math workshop. The workshop provides you the opportunity to reinforce your understanding of the lecture. You get to work problems and ask questions about the topics covered.
  • Cooperation. One special aspect of this program is that you will get to know your classmates very well. Students in this program help each other intellectually and emotionally. They create study groups and are encouraged to get together outside of normal class hours.
  • Class Participation. Students are expected to actively participate in the learning process. As a result, the classroom environment is very noisy. Students who find it difficult to learn in a noisy environment will not benefit from this program.
  • Study Sessions. In addition, students are expected to meet with the program's tutors for at least 3 hours per week. The tutors provide one-on-one support as well as tutoring. They will assist you with any problems you might have with the course material, and help you develop better study skills.
